We at Okavango Walking Safaris are here to accommodate your every need.

Jao Cultural Experience

3 nights

DAY 1

Our safari starts in Maun, the safari capital of Botswana. First, our guide will meet you at the airport or hotel in the morning. Then, this safari takes you to one of the most remote areas of the Okavango Delta. Next, you will hop on a boat for a transfer to your camp, which is set up on a stunning island. After a freshly prepared lunch and a little siesta, we will begin our first activity: a relaxing Bushwalk. Later, after a delicious dinner, we will have the chance to get to know each other and share some campfire stories before you sleep your first night in the heart of this beautiful wilderness.

DAY 2

Morning Activities
Over the next few days, you will explore this area through twice-daily activities. Specifically, these activities will focus on walking safaris and, if water levels permit, mokoro rides (traditional canoes). Moreover, mokoros can also be used to reach new walking areas nearby.

In the mornings, walks are typically longer (about 4–5 hours) due to the cooler temperatures. During these walks, you will learn about tracks and tracking, botanical information, birding, insects, and ecology related to the Okavango Delta.

Afternoon Activities
As the day becomes hotter, the afternoon activities will be more relaxed and tailored to the group’s comfort level. You may have the chance to enjoy shorter walks or simply immerse yourself in the serene beauty of the Delta.

Safety and Learning
Importantly, there are no set schedules, allowing the experience to feel natural and adaptable. All activities are conducted with safety as the top priority. Additionally, you will gain insights into local traditional medicines and other fascinating topics, providing you with a deeper understanding of the Delta’s unique ecosystem.

DAY 3

On this day, we will immerse ourselves in Jao culture and meet the local Bayei tribe. Imagine walking through an unfamiliar village and feeling welcomed at every corner. This is our home—Jao village, a beautiful, small community in the middle of the magical Okavango Delta.

Here, Jao will introduce you to the culture of living in the Delta. You will get to taste traditional food prepared by a local family. Furthermore, you will enjoy the feeling, taste, smell, and texture of one of the most authentic meals you’ll ever experience. For example, you will get to eat Tswii, the water lily stew, and taste wild honey and Ilala palm as a vegetable. This is just the beginning of a culinary journey that will open your palate to new dimensions.

Additionally, the cultural trip to Jao includes witnessing the best basket-weaving skills in Botswana. You will also learn how to dye the gorgeous baskets that are meticulously crafted. Women from the Bayei tribe have mastered this art using “mokola” palm tree fiber, woven around grass or vine. In fact, the barks and roots from different trees are used to create vibrant dye colors, beautifully showcasing the artistry of the Bayei people in Jao.

DAY 4

After a leisurely breakfast, we will leave this special place behind and return to Maun, where our shared wild experience will come to an end. Finally, we are happy to assist you in arranging any post-accommodation or ongoing travel plans. For those interested, this safari can also be combined with the “Wild Okavango Experience – Wildlife Explorer” or the “Wild Okavango Experience – Walking Safari.”
